What would possess someone to run a marathon 1.2km underground?

That question sat at the heart of The World's Deepest Marathon, a documentary following a group of runners as they prepared to take on one of the most unusual endurance challenges on Earth. Set deep beneath the surface in a working mine, the project used sport, adventure and unfiltered human curiosity as a way into a much bigger story.

Beneath the endurance challenge sat another objective. The campaign must challenge perceptions of modern mining.

So, rather than rely on traditional messaging, we built the story around curiosity, adventure and human achievement. The marathon became a reason to enter a world most people never see, while the runners provided an emotional connection to it.

Bringing streamer and content creator Seapeekay into the project extended that thinking further…

His background in streaming and world-building in Minecraft (we just had to) offered a natural bridge to younger audiences, helping the story travel far beyond the documentary through livestreaming and social content. It was incredible!

Far removed from the pickaxes, headlamps and canaries of popular imagination, today's mines are increasingly defined by advanced technology, remote-operated machinery and highly skilled operators.

Through the lens of the marathon, audiences discovered an industry that feels closer to science fiction than many realise.
